Advanced Materials for Environmental Applications
In addressing environment and energy challenges, a variety of heterogeneous photocatalysts and electrocatalysts have been developed, and are offering innovative solutions towards more efficient light harvesting and charge carrier dynamics. The proposed symposium will specifically focus on experimental work and computational studies related to 1) photocatalytic and 2) electrocatalytic degradation of pollutants, and 3) electrochemical / solar fuel systems for water splitting and CO2 reduction.

Agricultural and Environmental Applications of NMR Spectroscopy - joint with PT
NMR is arguably the most powerful spectroscopic tools available for the study of different forms of mater including liquids, solids, and semi-solids. Environmental samples, including (water, soil, plant materials, etc...) are among the most complex and challenging chemical systems to study. In the Agricultural and Environmental Applications of NMR Spectroscopy symposium (PT/EN), research on how NMR methodologies are being developed and applied to improve our understanding of contemporary environmental and agricultural problems will be presented.

Invited Speakers:
Bob Brua, Environment and Climate Change Canada – (40 minute lecture)
Barbara Cade-Menun, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada – (40 minute lecture)
Atmospheric Aerosol Chemistry & Physics: Laboratory Measurements, Field Observations, and Modelling
The “Atmospheric Aerosol Chemistry & Physics: Laboratory Measurements, Field Observations, and Modelling” symposium offers a platform to share and discuss your research efforts in atmospheric chemistry and physics. This symposium will encompass the diverse activities and approaches of the community on chemical reactions and physical transformations occurring in the atmosphere, with a focus on aerosol particle studies, ice nucleation, multiphase chemistry and related composition of the gas phase. We encourage contributions on laboratory experiments, field observations, as well as modelling studies – from single particles and detailed reaction mechanisms to frameworks for atmospheric chemistry at the global scale.

Environmental Impacts of Unconventional Energy Resources
Unconventional fossil fuels such as oil sands, shale gas and tight oil make up an increasingly larger proportion of global energy supplies. From an environmental perspective, the exploitation of these resources present different challenges compared to conventional fossil fuels. This session will explore multidisciplinary approaches to understand the impacts on air, water, soils, sediments and living organisms during any stage of unconventional energy resource development (e.g., mining, drilling, transportation, etc.).

Environmental Metallomics: New Insights Into Metal Speciation Within Living Systems
Total metal measurements in biological systems provide broad information about metal exposure but an incomplete understanding of metal interactions and toxicity within cells. To probe these interactions, significant advances have been made in recent years to quantify chemical forms and to determine the intracellular speciation of trace elements in biological systems. This special session will bring together recent chemical and subcellular studies as well as imaging and hyphenated techniques focused on metal and metalloids species within living systems.
